Why I like this book
by John Hawthorne
This book is so good I’ve had to buy several copies mainly because I’ve loaned them out and never got them back – it’s that good. Based on the teaching of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Hughes sets out some of the ways we can approach prayer (or how we ‘dig for treasure’ as he puts it), what to do when we come to those ‘dry periods’ when it’s so hard to pray, and how we begin to discern what God’s will for us is. Prayer for Hughes is not just about us talking to God but listening carefully as God reveals the truth of our lives to us. Hughes invites us to delve deeper into the reality of how we live and through prayer take a good long look at the things that hold us back from God make us unhappy and spoil our relationships with each other. The answers we get are often unexpected. Sometimes very unexpected which is why it’s called God of Surprises.
What Hughes writes is not new but his way of explaining it is clear refreshing very accessible and surprising. A good book for private reading or for group study with friends.
